The Walled Garden was originally a kitchen garden for the mansion and then a tree nursery before the Lakeland Horticultural Society acquired the site and developed it in the 1980s.
The herbaceous borders contain a wide
selection of interesting perennials, bulbs and corms.
The west-facing border is particularly noted for its silver and grey foliage plants and some tender shrubs, like the Callistemon that hails from New Zealand. The north facing border rarely sees the
sun in the winter months and yet is full of interest from shade-loving plants and the long east facing border is one of the glories of Holehird in the summer.
The central beds contain the hot colours, orange and
reds and shades of pink and yellow.
Specimen trees in this area include Prunus serrula with its lovely peeling mahogany bark and the wedding cake tree Cornus controversa 'Variegata'.
The patio in the corner by the Members' room contains the new herb beds and fine stone troughs and alpines along the wall edges.
