Hydrangea

The Hydrangea Collection contains around 300 species and cultivars, with the main display being in the Hydrangea Walk. Other specimens are alongside the Upper Drive, on the walls of the Walled Garden and in the Davidia Bed.

In Hydrangea Walk are some 150 cultivars of Hydrangea macrophylla, which originates from Japan, in 'mophead' and 'lacecap' forms. Our slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5) enables these to be seen in their full colour range of blue, mauve, pink, red and white during their flowering season which extends from July to October.

Also to be seen are species and cultivars of Hydrangea arborescens, aspera,  heteromalla, paniculata, quercifolia, serrata and others. Some of these are quite compact plants, while others are large shrubs, small trees or climbers.

Most hydrangeas benefit from light shade and a humus rich soil, and correct pruning is essential if optimum flowering is to be achieved.
