The Lakeland Horticultural Society is a charity whose aims are to promote the art and science of horticulture and good gardening practice. Its lectures are open to all, free of charge unless otherwise stated.

Horticultural Courses
These famous gardens form the perfect backdrop and teaching aid for a range of courses, presented in conjunction with The University of Cumbria, Newton Rigg.

'City and Guilds' The Art of Gardening
This is an every popular garden design, planting and maintenance course held on Thursdays for 30 weeks between 10:30am and 3:00pm, September to June. The course is a mix of lectures, practical skills training, demonstrations and garden visits.
It comprises five modules: Beds and Borders; Trees, Shrubs and Hedges; Cultivation, Soil and Science; Garden Design; Plant Propagation. This comprehensive course includes plant selection for given sites, maintenance through correct nutrition, pest and disease control, plant propagation, and the basics of garden design and planning. The course leads to a nationally recognised Level 2 City and Guilds Certificate in Gardening.
The City and Guilds course fees will be approximately £460 which includes registration and exam fees, and can be paid in instalments.
'Subsidiary Diploma' in Horticulture
This level 3 BTEC Course runs one day per week on Mondays from 9:00am to 4:00pm, September to June.
The course involves lectures, practical skills, site visits, plus personal research and project work. There are six units to the course which are: Garden Design Principles; Horticultural Science; Horticulture Skills; Plant Propagation; Plant Knowledge; Garden History.
This vocational course is both theoretical and practical in content, offering a sound professional level of knowledge and understanding of modern horticulture. The superb facilities at Holehird enable you to put into practice what you learn in the classroom.
